Followers Have Revived the PS3’s Quirky Metal Gear Online 2 on PC

Staying hidden in a box to trick an ignorant AI guard sounds exciting. But trying the same trick on a human is even better.

Back in 2005, Konami made the final multiplayer shame kill happen with a multiplayer add-on to Metal Gear Online. But using a network adapter to go online on PS2 took a lot of work and this is why MGO failed to last longer. The server went out two years from 2005.

However, Metal Gear Online 2 was different. It was launched with the PS3’s Metal Gear Solid 4 and received a lot of praises and appreciation from people. You can still see posts about MGO2 and most of these posts state that it was ahead of its time. Followers gave it a huge sendoff when the servers were shut down in 2012.

The servers were shut down by Konami and MGO2 was not available for a long time. But the best thing about PC gaming is that nothing stays dead forever. A group of heroic developers decided to revive the back with a custom version of the PS3 emulator RPCS3. Thanks to them that the game is once again available as MGO2PC. You can search the trailer online.

As per the MGO2PC website, PS3 emulation requires a lot of CPU power.

The ideal recommendation includes an 8-core, 16-thread CPU to run the game at its full potential. It should be able to run the game like a modern i7-10700K or Ryzen 3700X.

It is pretty impressive to see the things they have been able to bring back online. It’s not just a limited version of the multiplayer, but a full deal. If player’s wants to unlock full potential in the game, then they can try out NemoTrainer which gives free items. Additionally, it also includes all the cosmetic items and stat tracking in the game.

The best thing about this version is that it can be played on a PS3 console as well. All it requires is a PS3 with custom firmware to bypass PSN. For those uninitiated, Sony charges extra money from devs to support crossplay in PS games. But the fans of MGO2PC have made crossplay possible between PCs and PS3 just like that.

This is not the first time, but the game is supported by PS3 for many years. All credits go to the fan-made custom firmware. But comparatively, the PC version is better than the console one. This is because it can run at a higher frame rate and resolution due to emulation.

The online mode that is released with Metal Gear Solid 5 is not very popular mainly due to hacking issues.

MGO2 has some of the best elements today that was probably there even a decade ago. But there’s no denying that this is one of the finest PC games to play even today. MGO2 had certain features that we expect to see in modern-day multiplayer games. These kinds of features were very rare back in 2008.

MGO2PC happens to have a large player base. Not just that, but players are also interested in matches. If you want to try it out yourself, you can get a new copy of MGS4 for just $25.
