Air pollution – how to check its levels & how to protect yourself against it?

Winter is coming. For various European cities, it means one thing: air pollution is going to hit – maybe twice as hard as it did the year before. How to protect yourself against it? Keeping yourself informed is the key.

Even though the countries all around the world, including members of the European Union, have united in a common goal – fighting with climate change – the levels of CO2 emissions and air pollution remain on a high level. To lower it, various steps have to be taken on a global as well as local scale. Many European cities are continuously implementing strategies which are aiming to improve the air quality and lower the emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. They have various common points, such as improving public transport, expanding the net of bike paths, promoting the heating solution powered by electricity, not coal, or co-funding the solar panel installations.

However, air pollution is still a problem, and it will continue to be for at least another decade before all the implemented strategies bring a significant result. That’s why it’s so important for the inhabitants of the cities and towns – especially ones that are exposed to high levels of pollution – to monitor it.

Usually, they receive information when the air quality worsens the most – it is displayed on the bus stops or in public transport, and sometimes also sent by SMS. Nevertheless, monitoring it on your own will give you an extra sense of protection. Air pollution can be tricky at times – some gases and little particles that are harmful to your health cannot be seen or smelled. And the smog itself doesn’t always smell either – you could easily confuse it with regular fog.

How to protect yourself from smog and other types of air pollution?

Use apps

There are various apps on the market that allow you to check the air quality at the exact moment in your city. They measure the levels of distinct particles, which results in a full report on air pollution. Yes – it can be scary at times. But better safe than sorry!

Use air pollution map

Another way to verify the air quality in a particular place is to use the Air Pollution Map. It’s also useful for research, comparing the level of pollution in all of Europe.

Use mask

The whole world has been getting used to masks lately for another reason. But if you cannot omit to leave the house when the smog is around, that’s the best protection you can get! Obviously, the mask has to be made with the usage of filtration technology – the thin surgical one will do more damage than good.
