Teach to One: Math Selected by Texas Education Agency to Support State’s Blended Learning Initiative

New Classrooms Innovation Partners (New Classrooms) recently announced that Teach to Onewas selected by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) as an online curriculum provider for the state’s high-quality, blended learning initiative, Math Innovation Zones (MIZ).

You have probably heard the old adage that everything is bigger in Texas, and when describing the education system, it certainly rings true. The Texas Education Agency currently oversees public education for 5.4 million Texas students ranging from pre-K through high school. The mission of the TEA is to provide leadership, guidance, and resources to help schools meet the educational needs of all students and prepare them for success in the global economy. In 2017, the TEA proposed a transformative solution to address the learning gaps present in middle-grade math students.

The solution is known as Math Innovation Zones and launched during the 2018-2019 school year. MIZ is a four-year pilot, strategically designed and implemented to provide high-quality programming through blended learning with a personalized approach. The goal of MIZ is to ensure that students are prepared for college and careers by effectively bridging the gaps in math education.

The program, now going into its third year, recently announced new vendor options for school districts throughout the state to partner with in building their school’s Math Innovation Zones. The innovative learning approach developed by New Classrooms called Teach to One, has been selected as a MIZ vendor to provide online curriculum for the program.

Teach To One provides customized learning solutions for each math student based on a beginning assessment. The innovative instructional platform uses technology to provide high-quality lessons and dynamic curriculum customized to meet each student where they are each day. Teach To One allows students to learn math skills through multiple modalities of instruction, including independent learning, peer-to-peer collaboration, and teacher-led instruction.

Both New Classrooms and the TEA are mission-driven in providing opportunities for student achievement. The goal of the MIZ is to offer blended learning (a combination of in-person, online, and personalized approaches) to enhance student success in becoming college and career ready. Teach To One helps unearth learning gaps and, if necessary, adapts to well below grade level, ensuring that students rise to grade-level standards before moving on.

The selection of Teach To One as an approved online curriculum vendor for Texas’ MIZ seems like a natural choice. Texas’ MIZ was highlighted in New Classrooms’ 2019 white paper “The Iceberg Problem,” which identifies how the traditional classroom model does not fully support student success in ensuring math competency. It explains that a personalized, blended learning approach is an ideal solution to bridging those educational gaps.

Teach To One has been instrumental at the Ector County Independent School District in West Texas. Teach To One was launched in three of the county’s middle schools during the last school year, and the school district’s superintendent was impressed with the organization’s immediate response and shift to offering remote learning to students. As a newly approved vendor, Teach To One will have the opportunity to impact more students throughout the state in the year ahead.
